Irrigation & Lighting Technician ~ Full-time.
The Desert Botanical Garden is a major cultural institution in the Phoenix metropolitan area with a multi-faceted mission: conservation, education, research and exhibition of desert plants. The Garden is a community leader in modeling best practices and advocating for the sustainable health and growth of desert plants.
The horticulture department is responsible for the care and maintenance of over 50 acres of cultivated plant displays, collections, and exhibits. This position supports the department by assisting with the installation, renovation, and maintenance of the existing irrigation system, including sprinklers, drip systems, controllers and pump station. Additionally, this position assists with installation, renovation, and maintenance of all aspects of landscape lighting throughout the public planting beds and displays in the Garden.
Responsibilities include:
· Improve and maintain the plant irrigation systems for the entire Garden. This entails the general upkeep, acquisition of parts, and repairs of all aspects of the Garden's irrigation systems.
· Work with Assistant Director for Horticulture Operations to implement and perform regular irrigation reporting, monitoring key irrigation related items. Including updates to the Garden’s Landscape Management Plan.
· Install irrigation additions as plants are added and exhibits expanded, utilizing industry-wide best practices.
· Install and maintain landscape and trail lighting throughout Garden planting beds and trails utilizing industry wide best practices.
· Work with Assistant Director for Horticulture Operations to map all aspects of the irrigation and lighting system utilizing GPS technology and ArcGIS software.
· Assist with implementation of new landscapes of new areas as assigned by the Assistant Director of Horticulture Operations including updates to the Garden’s Landscape Management Plan.
· Assist other department staff with projects, special events and assignments when needed.
Requirements include:
1. Minimum 5 years of experience installing & maintaining intricate irrigation systems in public or private spaces
2. Knowledge of current industry technologies (i.e. Central Control Systems)
3. Experience with budgets and large-scale projects
4. Experience working with low voltage landscape and path lighting
5. Strong Customer Service skills
6. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and work in extreme weather conditions
7. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment (backhoe, forklift,
bobcat) preferred
