The Director of Agronomy (DOA) will report directly to the Club's Chief Operating Officer. The DOA is expected to be a highly visible leader, demonstrating outstanding agronomic, business, and communication skills. Responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance, management, and presentation of the golf course and club grounds.
*The ideal candidate will have Director of Agronomy experience with knowledge of Bent grass greens, project management and over seeded Bermuda grass, along with the transition of these surfaces during the southwest summer months. Positive team culture is a must, as well as mentorship to fellow team members.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
POSITION: Director of Agronomy (DOA)
DEPARTMENT: Golf Course
REPORTS TO: General Manager/COO
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position is entrusted with the maintenance, operation and management of the golf course maintenance program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Supervising the construction and maintenance of the golf course.
2. Supervising the maintenance and repair of all grounds equipment including well pump station and irrigation system.
3. Rendering professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the General Manager, Green Committee and the Club's Board of Directors as required.
4. Participating in strategic planning meetings that involve the golf course.
5. The Director of Agronomy assumes responsibility for managing and maintaining properties, which include the golf course and practice area.
6. Construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of such properties, whether performed by maintenance staff or outside contractors. The DOA must submit written plans for course construction, reconstruction or renovation projects to the General Manager, who will process plans through the Green Committee. Projects approved by the Green Committee will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval.
7. Preparation of the annual budget for the maintenance and capital improvements of the golf course. The DOA formulates the annual maintenance and capital budgets so as to implement Board policies established in accordance with the Club's strategic plan and defined maintenance standards and submits to the General Manager for approval and acceptance.
8. Interview, train, direct and supervise grounds staff for the purpose of maintaining Club properties. The DOA has the authority to terminate employment of subordinates in accordance with Club policies and applicable laws.
9. Planning of all maintenance and project work, applying his agronomic and administrative expertise to achieve the Club's maintenance standards and strategic plan goals.
10. Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish daily assignments. The DOA frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well the management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.
11. Acquires equipment and purchases necessary supplies to maintain the golf course. The DOA is responsible for inventory control and oversees the equipment maintenance programs. The DOA approves all expenditures and exercises cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with approved budgets.
12. Maintains accurate and complete records on payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc. Complies with all State and Federal regulations regarding chemical applications.
13. Communicates regularly with other members of the Club's top management group to discuss activities, goals, plans and member input.
14. Prepares an Annual Master Maintenance Plan for the golf course and in concert with the General Manager, submits the Plan to the Green Committee and Board of Directors for approval.
15. Ensures the security of the maintenance building and all equipment.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Requires advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass, management practice; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods; and a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf.
2. Requires a high degree of administration and executive ability, especially in terms of problem solving and decision-making.
3. Requires knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management of golf course operations including, but not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, and laws and regulations.
4. Requires a current State of Arizona certification and licensing as a pesticide applicator.
5. Required participation in continuing education opportunities such as seminars, workshops, field days and trade shows for purposes of continued education.
6. Will adhere to specific "performance criteria" as outlined in the Employment Agreement.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires the ability to regularly stand, squat, and walk for long periods. Withstand constant exposure to outside elements. Frequently lifts carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Ability to discuss and exchange information with employees. Continual exposure to fumes, seeds, pesticides, fertilizers and solvents.
