JOB DESCRIPTION

Definition:  The equipment manager reports to the Head Groundskeeper and oversees a comprehensive preventive maintenance program. This program includes the repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. The equipment manager properly communicates any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to Head Groundskeeper and Lead Groundskeepers. The equipment manager places safety as a top priority and is responsible for maintaining a clean service area and maintenance building. 

Essential Functions:  Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks and other characteristics.  This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be comprehensive list of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

Tasks:

1.     Preventative Maintenance (PM): Maintains PM schedule per the manufacturer’s recommendations.     

• Develops and maintains preventative maintenance schedules to minimize equipment down time. 
• Inputs, updates, and tracks the status of all maintenance records, repair work orders, parts usage and reordering to maintain accountability for all work performed.     
• Orders and tracks the purchase and delivery of repair parts and replacement supplies. 
• Cleans and maintains repair shop area and ensures the proper care and storage of tools.

2.     Equipment Repair & Maintenance: 

• Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects/failures in facility maintenance equipment including but not limited to reel mowers, rotary mowers, utility carts, tractors, sweepers, todressers and golf carts (electric and gas-powered).    
• Inspects and adjusts reel mowers daily and performs field inspection of equipment.
• Grinds reels and bedknives as needed to maintain highest quality of cut.
• Instructs and trains workers regarding preventive maintenance and proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment. 
• Complies with OSHA safety standards and helps ensure staff compliance.
• Prioritizes equipment repair and maintenance work. 
• Responds to “emergency” repair situations as needed.   

3.     Miscellaneous:  Performs other job related duties as assigned to enhance facility operation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

·         Knowledge of principles and practices of PM and repair methods of equipment, tools, and materials related to maintaining turfgrass at a professional sports facility or golf course. 

·         Knowledge of the principles and methods of reel and bedknife grinding, height of cut adjustments and all matters directly related to quality of cut on high-maintenance turfgrass.  

·         Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the repair of machinery.   

·         Knowledge of PM and repair of electric and gas-powered golf carts (EZ-GO, Club Car and Columbia)

·         Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, management staff, and the general public. 

·         Skill using a variety of equipment repair tools, and performing various types of mechanical repair. 

·         Skill operating related technical diagnostic equipment associated with engine/equipment repairs.

·         Skill installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet required specifications. 

·         Skill following verbal and written instructions, procedures, blueprints, and diagrams. 

·         Skill planning and organizing work assignments.   

·         Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work.

·         Ability to read and follow technical manuals to diagnose, troubleshoot and make equipment and small engine repairs. 

·         Ability to accurately interpret instructions, specifications, and manuals to solve repair problems.

·         Ability to work with cleaning fluids and agents, chemicals, solvents, and degreasers using normal protective equipment.

·         Ability to monitor and maintain computerized preventive maintenance records and logs.

·         Ability to pick up and move objects weighing at least 50 pounds.

·         Ability to verbally communicate at a level that ensures productivity and quality of work. 

·         Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.

Qualifications:

·         Experience:  5+ years of experience as a sports facility or golf course equipment manager/mechanic maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding gasoline and diesel small engines, machinery, and hydraulics.  Must also have extensive knowledge and experience with reel and bedknife grinding.  

   

·         Special Requirements:  Requires the ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays.

• Requires successful completion of a background check.
• Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions while repairing equipment.    
• Requires ability endure exposure to hazardous chemicals and work safety with fuels and other chemicals.   
• Must be able to lift, carry and maneuver equipment and parts used for repairs.   
• Must be able to stand, walk, and work in small, cramped areas for prolonged periods to make equipment repairs.
