Golf Course Superintendent Profile:
Oak Park Country Club
River Grove, IL

The Club

The Oak Park Country Club a private, full service, 18-hole golf and country club was established in 1914 and is currently celebrating its centennial.  This private member owned club whose purpose, at founding, and as now, was to promote the game of golf and good fellowship among its members, their families and their guests.  Because the natural beauty and wooded terrain have been carefully preserved and tastefully improved over the years, Oak Park Country Club has become one of the premier country clubs in the Chicago area with over 500 member families.

The golf course, also known as “the course of the winding stream,” was designed by architect Donald J. Ross, who, from 1900-1948 designed or redesigned over 400 courses.  The original links style golf course has since evolved from the heavily bunkered, links style course of 1914 to today’s parkland setting. A renovation completed in 2007 by architect Rick Jacobsen included new tee boxes, bunkers, expanded putting surfaces, and added length.  The golf course hosts the Radix Cup Matches annually and periodically the United States Open Sectional Qualifier.

The original clubhouse and subsequent additions and updates have preserved the Prairie School architecture designed by founding members who were contemporaries of Frank Lloyd Wright.  There are many traditions in Oak Park’s storied history including several annual club golf tournaments and a strong caddy program. Oak Park also features fine dining and banquet facilities, as well as a recently renovated pool and a tennis complex.  The Club
