Guyan Golf & Country Club is looking for a Golf Course Superintendent with strong agronomic and leadership skills with a passion for providing exceptional golfing conditions.
GUYAN GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
The beautiful Guyan Golf & Country Club that exists today in scenic Huntington, West Virginia, is a tribute to the resourcefulness and courage of its members. Guyan is a club that rose from the tragedy of fire on two occasions, in 1932, and again in 1954. Exemplifying the faith of its founders, Guyan soon rose again. The membership set about the task of erecting a new clubhouse. It was built and opened less than a year and a half later. The speed with which the new building was planned, designed, and made a reality stands as an accolade to the character of Guyan's membership.
In 1942 4,000 watched an exhibition between Arnold Browning and Denny Shute against Byron Nelson and Harold McSpahen. Arnold Browning was with Guyan for 50 years as caddie master and club maker and then as head golf professional. Guyan was also the home club of William “Bill” Campbell, Past President of the United States Golf Association.
The Guyan Golf Course was built in 1922 in the east section of Huntington. The course is a Herbert Strong Design par 71 course. Guyan measures 6,523 yards from the championship tees, and features medium-sized greens with just enough woods to make it interesting. The course is a transition zone golf course with Bermuda fairways, Bent grass greens, and Bermuda and Bent tees. There is a spring and fall aerification. The course is open for golf 12 months per year, weather permitting.
The course has also hosted several West Virginia Opens. The first, in 1936, was won by Sam Snead, who also qualified for his first U.S. Open at the course.
Located in the Tri-State region, Huntington sits on the mid-section of the scenic and historic Ohio River at the point where West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky meet. The city is home to 49,177 citizens and serves a Tri-State area of 365,000. With the perfect combination of small town charm and big city feel, Huntington boasts an impressive, historic downtown with endless opportunities for shopping, dining and entertainment. The city is the home of Marshall University which brings a vibrancy to the city as well as many cultural and sports events.
In the last several years, the Club has focused on and been committed to improving air movement and reducing shade on the greens through extensive tree and brush removal. The Club will continue improving the growing environment for all turf areas.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Golf Course Superintendent (GCS) reports directly to the General Manager and liaises with the Grounds and Greens Committee Chairman at Guyan Golf & Country Club. The GCS is expected to provide quality leadership and will lead and manage his/her department to ensure superb golf course conditioning on a daily basis. The GCS is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the Guyan Golf & Country Club golf course and grounds.
Continuing education and staying at the forefront of research and technology are necessary for success. In addition, the GCS will provide innovative, relevant leadership and will perpetuate and foster an educational culture of developing and producing future turf professionals. The GCS must have a natural style of “sincere engagement” with members and staff along with a love of the game of golf and a relentless attention to detail.
INITIAL AREAS OF FOCUS
· Continue improving putting greens and bentgrass populations
· Continue to improve fairway density and quality with a goal of providing full, dense fairways through the season, assess shade challenges
· Provide a high level of detail work
· Develop a rough improvement program
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will be a Golf Course Superintendent or the First Assistant at a top tier club with a minimum of five years’ experience.
· Successful experience with managing Poa/Bent pushup greens in similar climates
· Familiar with and successful experience managing cool and warm season turfs; including Poa/Bent greens, Bermuda fairways, and cool season roughs in the transition zone
· Experience managing and controlling warm season grasses in the roughs and cool season grasses in the fairways
- Experience in tree management and shade mitigation to improve the turf growing environment
- Understanding of all pest control techniques
· Solid irrigation management philosophy and practices
· Strong agronomic skills-stays current with advances in turf technology and equipment
· Proven history of providing exceptional golfing conditions and managing all aspects of the golf course and landscape at the highest level
· Subscribes to sustainable maintenance practices (e.g. firm and fast, sound irrigation philosophy)
· High energy, focused leader
- Possesses leadership qualities that have resulted in high employee satisfaction-proven staff retention, low turnover
- Strong relationship builder with a history of excellent relations with their Golf Professional and General Manager
- Experience developing standard operating procedures and training programs
- Experience mentoring team members
- Proven success in developing assistants to promotion
- Excellent communication skills-listens to and responds to both club members and team members
- Strong budget management and forecasting (zero based) skills
- Experience developing capital equipment replacement plans
· Strong observational skills, detail oriented
· Highly organized
- Golfer/student of the game with a sound understanding of ideal playing conditions
- High Golf IQ is essential
EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS
A degree in turf management or related field of study is required. GCSAA Certification and Pesticide Certification is preferred.
