Job Summary: | The Superintendent is responsible for maintaining high caliber, top performing golf course and practice facility which promote an exceptional golf experience for our members and guests. Responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the golf courses including, turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, property/asset management, project management, personnel management, budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance or irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. This position reports directly to the Director of Agronomy and works closely with the Director of Golf on course conditions and playability and communicates and interacts with members regularly through written and in-person appearances. OBJECTIVE/FUNCTION | ||||
Directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The superintendent may serve in the Director of Agronomy’s capacity during his/her absence. Assists in planning, organizing, directing, or coordinating activities of workers engaged in landscaping or grounds keeping activities, such as planting and maintaining ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns, according to contract specifications. Work may involve reviewing contracts negotiate price ranges; and preparing estimates according to labor, material, and machine costs. Assists Director of Agronomy in budget/forecasting, financial management, member relations, scheduling/maintenance or irrigation systems, pesticide applications, related recordings, and compliance of regulatory issues. Ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, OSHA rules and regulations, all club rules and regulations. | ||||
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES | ||||
· Assist in establishing and enforcing operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personnel safety. · Direct activities of workers who perform duties such as landscaping, cultivating lawns, pruning trees, and shrubs. · Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment. | ||||
· Oversees the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish the work. The superintendent frequently inspects the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs. · Assist in training workers in tasks such as transplanting and pruning trees and shrubs, finishing cement, using equipment and caring for turf. · Monitor project activities to ensure that instructions are followed, deadlines are met, and schedules are maintained. · Provide workers with assistance in performing duties as necessary to meet deadlines. · Inventory supplies of tools, equipment and materials to ensure that sufficient supplies are available and equipment is in usable condition. | ||||

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS |

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time while working on the grounds, have good communication skills (i.e., communicate clearly and effectively in both written and spoken English). Must be able to lift and move materials weighing up to 110 pounds – maintaining grounds require bending, climbing, stooping, carrying and/or lifting materials. Performing movements which require considerable movement of arms, legs and moving entire body as well as maneuvering and navigating vehicles and mechanized equipment. |

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS |

Must be able to work outdoors exposed to all weather conditions. May come in contact with various insecticides, fumes, fertilizers, exhaust and other pollutants. Must be able to see and work with other employees and work in open area. |

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS |

EDUCATION: Must have a minimum, 2 year Turfgrass Management Certificate at an accredited university. Pesticide and Applicator License required. Four-year bachelor’s degree preferred. Possession of a valid driver’s license. |

EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE: Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience as a First Assistant at a top level golf course facility. Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, greens; the seeding/over seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls. Ability to lead projects from start to finish; emphasis knowledge on construction projects. |

SKILLS: Able to interact successfully with a variety of people in person with attention to comprehending information. Excellent oral communication skills as well as understanding written communication in work related documents. Time management and independent thinking skills are a must. Ability to train and develop GCM team. Possess strong observation skills. Bi-lingual preferred. Possess intermediate computer skills and literacy. |
