This is a wonderful opportunity for candidates with a history of positive professional experiences. Memphis Country Club is one of the oldest private golf courses in the country. This Donald Ross golf course was one of the first courses in the country with Ultradwarf Bermudagrass and has a history of great golfing conditions.

 

The Director of Golf Course Maintenance will be accountable for maintaining Memphis Country Club's reputation as one of the finest conditioned golf courses in the area.  He/She will enjoy the support of an active and proud membership looking to support a Superintendent who relishes his/her role in maintaining the reputation the club enjoys.  He/she should approach his/her responsibility knowing that the condition of the golf course is central to the esteem by which the club is held by its members, guests and informed golf enthusiasts throughout the region. 

 

 

MEMPHIS COUNTRY CLUB

 

THE CLUB

 

In 2005, Memphis Country Club celebrated its 100th Anniversary. Memphis Country Club is a private organization offering over 900 member families with facilities in which they can relax and enjoy their leisure time.  The members are the owners of the club.  Their objective is to provide each member and their guests with prompt, gracious, and individualized service in a warm and friendly environment along with an exceptional golf experience.  

 

The course was redesigned by Donald Ross in 1910 and has remained relatively unchanged since that time and recently Kris Spence renovation of the tees and restoration of the Ross bunkering. The club has hosted numerous state and regional tournaments along with the 1948 US Amateur, the 1959 US Senior Amateur, and the 1979 US Women's Amateur.

 

The club is regarded as the preeminent club in Memphis and its members are proud of their golf course and club. The club has a history of long tenured employees, including a highly qualified and experienced golf course and grounds maintenance team. The management team of the General Manager, Golf Professional and retiring Director of Golf Course Maintenance average over 30 years of employment with the club; Memphis Country Club is indeed a special place.

 

The facilities include an 18-hole golf course, golf practice facility, 3 indoor and 8 outdoor tennis courts, swimming pool, men's and women's fitness centers, golf and tennis pro shops, maintenance facility, steam, sauna, massage therapy, and barber.  The club has 11 hotel rooms and suites located in the clubhouse. Dining areas include Tap Room, Red Room, Terrace, Dining Room, Pool House, and Tennis Snack Bar. Other areas available to the membership for private dining and entertaining include the Ballroom, Cocktail Lounge, and several small private rooms.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Director of Golf Course Maintenance of Memphis Country Club should be a driven individual who embraces the responsibility and challenge of managing the condition of a golf course expected to be among the finest in the area.  They must be hardworking, hands-on and possess strong general management acumen, able to manage the course within a generous budget built upon the foundation of high expectations for the condition of the golf course and grounds.

 

The Director of Golf Course Maintenance, who reports to the club's General Manager, will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the golf course and surrounding grounds of Memphis Country Club. He/She is expected to maintain the facility in the manner that will present Memphis Country Club as a world-class experience for members, their families and guests. The Superintendent will possess the ability to work in conjunction with the Golf Professional on a consistent basis to maintain the best possible facility while consulting with the General Manager regularly. Takes ownership to review and recommend necessary changes to the club on an annual basis.

 

The ideal candidate will be highly visible, organized, well respected, passionate about golf and have a strong ability to communicate, both written and verbally. Possessing the ability to be an active participate/leader in meetings. The Director of Golf Course Maintenance will be a key member of the senior management and a "leader by example" for his/her staff.

 

The Director of Golf Course Maintenance's responsibilities include, but are not limited to: golf course conditions, club grounds, financial management to consist of operating, capital and long term planning, oversight of renovation projects, maintain equipment inventory and maintenance, staff development retention and recruitment, member and staff interaction.

 

 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

 

The ideal candidate will have had a progressive career path as a Director of Golf Course Maintenance or Golf Course Superintendent with a proven record of providing outstanding golfing conditions at the highest possible level in a similar quality club environment. Assistant Superintendents with significant experience at Club's known for outstanding golfing conditions may also be given consideration to the position.

 

The ideal candidate will have these agronomic qualifications:

 

·         Extensive experience with PUSH-UP GREENS

·         Experience with green expansions

·         Ultradwarf experience both management and establishment

·         A history of providing fast, healthy greens

·         Zoysia management and control of Bermudagrass contamination

·         Experience with tree care and master-planning

·         Overall maintenance, operations and management of the golf courses and grounds to provide the membership with an outstanding golf experience on a daily basis.

 

The ideal candidate will have these management skills:

 

·         Strong written and oral communication skills

·         Ability and interest to actively engage the membership to solicit feedback, ideas and share information pertinent to the course conditions and plans

·         A history of strong budget forecasting, ensuring the adherence to budget forecasts and reports regularly to the GM and CFO regarding budget to actual results and variances

·         A global view of the club with strong interdepartmental connections, a team player

·         Interacts closely with the GM and Golf Professional to ensure that member expectations are met or exceeded

·         Ability to solve problems and capable of making sound business decisions

·         Spanish language fluency, operational

·         Experience with project oversight

·         A network of people for research, contact and networking in agronomics and golf course maintenance

·         Exhibits a detail oriented approach to golf course maintenance and facilities care

·         Overall maintenance, operations and management of the golf courses and grounds to provide the membership with an outstanding golf experience on a daily basis

·         Protects the club's assets including the golf course, grounds and water rights/use

·         Proper record keeping of payroll, inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, pesticide applications, etc.

·         Supervising the maintenance and repair of the club's equipment

·         Ensures that the proper and timely maintenance of necessary agronomic, regulatory, and employee records

·         Participating in long-range planning involving golf course and related operations

·         Interacts with Assistant Superintendent pursuant to the appraisal, discipline, and/or discharge, of any employee

·         Serves as a mentor in the training and development of all senior staff, and other personnel

·         Ensures that a positive and healthy working environment exists throughout the department, one that is free of safety risks and all forms of employee harassment.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS

 

·         Degree in Turfgrass Management or Agronomy

·         CGCS is preferred
